Semarang-lecturers of the Diponegoro University Biotechnology study Program on Thursday, October 19, 2023 organized Community Service Activities (PKM) and visits to Takhasus Plus Al Mardliyah Junior and Senior High School students in Kendal Regency. Community Service topics presented related to the introduction of biotechnology and its applications.
The event was hosted by Prof. Dr. Endang Kusdiyantini, DEA, Dr. Dra. Arina Tri Lungani, M.Si and Drs. The great surfer, M.Si as speakers.
In this activity Prof. Endang conveyed that biotechnology is related to the utilization of scientific methods and engineering of organisms, biological processes to produce and or increase the potential of organisms and produce products and services that are beneficial to the interests of human life. The term biotechnology was first used by the Hungarian engineer Karl Ereky in 1919.
Prof. Endang continued that Biotechnology has been used for various activities that produce use value. It is like in the manufacturing sector tempe, tape and others. However, the scale of utilization is still very limited because it is done conventionally. Currently in the modern era, biotechnology is experiencing significant development because of its potential benefits for human life. In today’s modern era, the utilization of Biotechnology is multisector, which is graded into four fields, namely red, white, green and blue.
The application of red biotechnology is the application of Biotechnology in the medical field, such as the production of drugs and vaccines. White biotechnology is Biotechnology applied in industrial fields, such as the development and production of new compounds and the manufacture of renewable energy sources such as enzyme production. Green biotechnology leads to the application of Biotechnology in agriculture and animal husbandry, such as transgenic crops and gene cloning. Blue Biotechnology is the application of biotechnology to the waters that control the processes that occur in the aquatic environment, such as genetic engineering for disease-resistant fish, vaccines and more.
Biotechnology is a very important science in the future because it is environmentally friendly and the results are very effective to provide more benefits for human life and the environment.
This activity was enthusiastically followed by Junior High School students from Takhasus Plus Al Mardliyah. As well as the teachers who expressed their happiness and gratitude for this activity so that the knowledge of Biotechnology for students and students increased.
