Congratulations for Romario Dion and Pragati Wira Anggini, Biotechnology Study Program Students, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Diponegoro University, who had successfully won the Gold Medal and PKM-PE-7 (Exact Research Students Creativity Program) Favorite Champion in the 33rd Pekan Ilmiah Mahasiswa Nasional (PIMNAS) event. The event was held online from 26 to 28 November 2020 in Gadjah Mada University.
The PKM-PE team consists of Moch Ali Utomo (Biology Study Program), Romario Dion (Biotechnology Study Program), Pragati Wira Anggini (Biotechnology Study Program), and under the guidance of Dr. Wijanarka, M.Si (A Lecturer of Biology Department).
In the 33rd PIMNAS event, the PKM-PE team presented the results of research and innovation related to inulinolytic yeasts for low calorie sugar production. The title of the research displayed was “Utilization of Indigenous Inulinolytic Yeast (Bagasse) as Inulinase Biocatalyst Producer in Low-Calorie Sugar Production”.
In their research, this team used bagasse and dahlia tubers as carbon sources in the form of inulin. The composition of bagasse and dahlia tubers was used as a medium for the growth of an indigenous inulinolytic yeast, Kluyveromyces marxianus. With the addition of metal ion Ca2 + as a cofactor to optimize the activity of the inulinase enzyme, this inulinolytic yeast has the potential to increase fructose levels for low-calorie sugar production on an industrial scale. This innovation could be an alternative for low calorie sugar production on an industrial scale.
