Semarang – Diponegoro University’s Biotechnology Study Program on Wednesday, January 26-27, 2022 held a Bioinformatics Workshop. At this event, the speakers were Dyah Wulandari, PhD, Arifah Nur Aini, S.Si., M.Si, and Yuriza Eshananda, M.Si.

Dyah Wulandari, PhD presented about primer design technique using the SnapGene application. He explained that the SnapGene application could be used to design primers according to what users want. In contrast to some other primer design platforms that only produce primer recommendations with a short PCR product, the SnapGene application could be configured to be able to produce primer sequences with a high PCR product. Dyah Wulandari, PhD added that this application has been widely used because of its complete and user friendly features.

In the second session, Arifah Nur Aini, S.Si., M.Si, explained how to construct a phylogenetic tree using several supporting applications. The applications used during the training are BIOEDIT, PAUP, ALIVIEW and MUSCLE 3.6 applications. The phylogenetic tree itself has a very important function in describing the relationship between strains or sample species being tested.

The third session on the second day was brought directly by Yuriza Eshananda, M.Si. He clarified the potential use of bioinformatics software in predicting the shape of a chemical compound in three-dimensional or 3D form. The software used including Autodock, MGLTools, Biovia Discovery Studio and USFC Chimera. In addition, this software can be used in molecular docking techniques that predict the preferred orientation, affinity, and interaction of a ligand in the binding site of a protein.

This event lasted for 13.5 hours and was followed enthusiastically by more than 40 participants consisting of practicum assistants, lecturers and education staff until the end of the event.
