HISTORY OF BIOTECHNOLOGY STUDY PROGRAM

Biotechnology Study Program is under the Department of Biology which was originally a study program that was established based on the Undip Rector’s Decree Number: 63 / SK / PT09 / 1988. Biology Study Program developed into a Department based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture Number: 220 / DIKTI / Kep / 1996 which has 7 laboratories, namely: basic biology laboratories, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Plant Biostructure & Function laboratories, Animal Biostructures & Functions, and laboratories. Ecology and Biosystematics. Genetics, Microbiology and Biochemistry Laboratory which later turned into a Biotechnology Laboratory and became the forerunner to the opening of the Biotechnology Study Program.

The plan for the establishment of the Biotechnology Study Program began with the results of observations of undergraduate students from the Biotechnology Laboratory in getting a job after graduation which showed the high job opportunities in Indonesia that required expertise in biotechnology both in government agencies and research institutions. The plan to establish a Biotechnology Undergraduate Program had been supported by the 2015-2019 Strategic Plan of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics of Diponegoro University. The opening of this new study program was also in accordance with the Vision, Mission and Objectives of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics to meet the demands of science and technology progress (IPTEK) and accommodate the needs of stakeholders at home and abroad, which would help the government and provide certainty that the opening of the Biotechnology Study Program did not result in additional burdens for the government ( financially) and the main mission of the Study Program was still well handled. This was why the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Diponegoro University, as one of the educational providers, was called to participate in answering these needs by fostering and developing reliable skilled workers in Indonesia, especially in the field of biotechnology. Therefore, in order to provide a forum for increasing human resources who had adequate qualifications of expertise in accordance with the needs of Biotechnology graduates nationally, the Faculty of Science and Mathematics of Diponegoro University felt the need to develop a new Study Program that produced competent graduates, as an effort to improve biotechnology development in Indonesia.

For this reason, the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Diponegoro University, opened a Biotechnology Undergraduate Program. Furthermore, in 2018, the Department of Biology established the Undergraduate Program in Biotechnology. The Biotechnology Undergraduate Program was established in 2018 according to the Decree of the Undip Chancellor Number 700 / UN7.P / HK / 2018 dated June 1, 2018 and strengthened by SK BAN-PT Number: 22 / SK / BAN-PT / Min-Akred / S / IV / 2019 dated 23 April 2019.
